Sur le papier d\u00e9chir\u00e9, <em>\u00ab\u2009Misty\u2009\u00bb<\/em> \u00e9tait \u00e9crit en gros caract\u00e8res et <em>\u00ab\u2009please\u2009\u00bb<\/em> en plus petits. <br><br><em>\u00ab\u2009Misty\u2009\u00bb<\/em> n\u2019aurait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 le choix attendu pour ce piano particulier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>En effet, l\u2019instrument a appartenu \u00e0 Cole Porter depuis le milieu des ann\u00e9es 1930 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort en 1964, alors qu\u2019il vivait au sommet du Waldorf Astoria. Il y a d\u2019ailleurs une plaque qui proclame\u2009: \u00ab\u2009Certaines des plus belles chansons de l\u2019histoire musicale am\u00e9ricaine ont \u00e9t\u00e9 compos\u00e9es sur ce Steinway.\u2009\u00bb<br><br>Il \u00e9tait adorable\u2026 \u00e0 part un vilain do m\u00e9dian.<br><br>Affubl\u00e9 d\u2019une sc\u00e8ne d\u2019un paysagiste britannique peinte sur le couvercle en acajou, le piano \u00e9tait sur le point d\u2019\u00eatre d\u00e9construit.<br><br>Ainsi, la derni\u00e8re chanson jou\u00e9e sur le piano de Cole Porter n\u2019\u00e9tait probablement pas une de ses m\u00e9lodies comme \u00ab\u2009Night and Day\u2009\u00bb ou \u00ab\u2009You&rsquo;re the Top\u2009\u00bb. OK, c\u2019\u00e9tait juste une de ces choses (\u00ab\u2009Just one of those things\u2009\u00bb, clin d\u2019\u0153il de l\u2019auteur).<br><br>Ron Losby, le pr\u00e9sident-directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Steinway &amp; Sons, a plaisant\u00e9 plus tard en disant qu\u2019il aurait d\u00fb y avoir un r\u00e9cipient \u00e0 pourboire. Le piano, devenu \u00e9l\u00e9ment de d\u00e9cor dans le hall Waldorf apr\u00e8s la mort de Porter, a \u00e9t\u00e9 transport\u00e9 dans un entrep\u00f4t en 2017 lorsque l\u2019h\u00f4tel a ferm\u00e9 pour des r\u00e9novations. Ce n\u2019est que r\u00e9cemment qu\u2019il est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019usine Steinway d\u2019Astoria, dans le Queens, un endroit empli de bois, de feutre et de fonte et des pi\u00e8ces m\u00e9caniques n\u00e9cessaires \u00e0 la musique\u2009: agrafes, serre-joints, etc.<br><br>Comme indiqu\u00e9 par un autre cadre de Steinway, l\u2019instrument \u00e9tait l\u00e0 en \u00ab\u2009camp de vacances pour pianos\u2009\u00bb. En fait, il s\u2019agit plut\u00f4t d\u2019un spa o\u00f9 les pianos peuvent aller quelques mois pour se rafra\u00eechir, voire pour des soins intensifs.<br><br>Le Waldorf a aussi \u00e9t\u00e9 le th\u00e9\u00e2tre d\u2019un travail intensif. L\u2019h\u00f4tel a \u00e9t\u00e9 achet\u00e9 en 2014 pour pr\u00e8s de 2 milliards de dollars par le groupe chinois Anbang Insurance Group, qui a ensuite annonc\u00e9 son intention de transformer une grande partie du b\u00e2timent en copropri\u00e9t\u00e9s de luxe. Kennedy, provenant de la suite pr\u00e9sidentielle. <br><br>\u00c0 l\u2019usine, deux ouvriers exp\u00e9riment\u00e9s, David Gonzalez et Joseph Guarascio, ont commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9monter le piano de Cole Porter avec l\u2019aide de leur patron, Bill Youse. Tandis qu\u2019ils enlevaient le couvercle et examinaient l\u2019int\u00e9rieur, l\u2019un d\u2019eux a \u00e9t\u00e9 tent\u00e9 de faire un autre clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 Cole Porter. Ils allaient au fond des choses (allusion aux paroles de <em>\u00ab\u2009I&rsquo;ve Got You Under My Skin\u2009\u00bb<\/em>).<br><br>M. Gonzalez, qui travaille chez Steinway depuis 29 ans, et M. Guarascio, qui y travaille depuis 16 ans, n\u2019ont pas tard\u00e9 \u00e0 sortir le clavier en entier, ainsi que les marteaux qui frappent les cordes. Ils ont desserr\u00e9 les chevilles d\u2019accordage et coup\u00e9 les grosses cordes de basse en cuivre. Ils ont soulev\u00e9 la plaque de fonte, exposant la table d\u2019harmonie.<br><br>Apr\u00e8s l&rsquo;avoir d\u00e9pec\u00e9, ils ont gard\u00e9 le cadre incurv\u00e9 et les pieds, le squelette du Steinway Cole Porter, No 129281, qui leur sont familiers. La firme a num\u00e9rot\u00e9 chaque piano fabriqu\u00e9 en 165 ans d\u2019histoire. Celui de Cole Porter, termin\u00e9 en 1907, a \u00e9t\u00e9 vendu en 1908\u2009; il \u00e9tait le 129281<sup>e<\/sup>.<br><br>Steinway ignore o\u00f9 s\u2019est trouv\u00e9 le piano pendant ses 28 premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es. Les archives montrent qu\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 livr\u00e9 \u00e0 une adresse de la 81<sup>e<\/sup> rue Ouest \u00e0 Manhattan en 1908. La date suivante dans le registre manuscrit de Steinway est 1945, lorsque le piano a \u00e9t\u00e9 renvoy\u00e9 pour r\u00e9paration.<br><br>Le biographe William McBrien n\u2019a pas d\u2019explication, mais il a racont\u00e9 comment Porter est entr\u00e9 en possession du num\u00e9ro 129281. Il s\u2019agissait d\u2019un cadeau de la direction de Waldorf apr\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e dans les ann\u00e9es 1930.<br><br>Porter menait grand train et sa suite au Waldorf \u00e9tait assez appropri\u00e9e pour le compositeur de <em>\u00ab\u2009You&rsquo;re the Top\u2009\u00bb<\/em>. M. McBrien a compar\u00e9 la pi\u00e8ce dans laquelle se trouvait le piano \u00e0 une cath\u00e9drale. Ce devait \u00eatre le cas, non seulement parce que le num\u00e9ro 129281 fait plus de deux m\u00e8tres de long, mais aussi parce qu\u2019il n\u2019\u00e9tait pas le seul piano sur les lieux. \u00ab\u2009Porter y avait plac\u00e9 deux pianos \u00e0 queue courbe dans courbe, les interpr\u00e8tes se faisant face,\u2009\u00bb \u00e9crit M. McBrien.<br><br>Mais le compositeur \u00e9tait aussi sensible au risque de r\u00e9veiller d\u2019autres r\u00e9sidents au milieu de la nuit, moment auquel il jouait fr\u00e9quemment. \u00ab\u2009Avec sa tendance \u00e0 se mettre au travail apr\u00e8s minuit, il a fait poser une mousse acoustique pour amortir le son de son piano afin de ne pas d\u00e9ranger les voisins.\u2009\u00bb L\u2019un de ceux-ci, a rapport\u00e9 M. Horbachevsky a dit qu\u2019il avait une fois emmen\u00e9 sa fille Natalie prendre le th\u00e9 au Waldorf dans les ann\u00e9es 1990, quand elle avait 8 ou 9 ans. \u00ab\u2009Je ne suis pas un buveur de th\u00e9,\u2009\u00bb dit-il, mais il voulait qu\u2019elle voie le piano. <br><br>Ce qu\u2019ils ont vu \u00e9tait un meuble en acajou peint par le paysagiste d\u2019origine britannique Arthur Blackmore. La sc\u00e8ne sur le couvercle montre des gens en perruques poudr\u00e9es et tricornes \u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur d\u2019une villa. L\u2019un joue d\u2019un instrument ressemblant \u00e0 une clarinette.<br><br>Blackmore travaillait pour le directeur du d\u00e9partement artistique de Steinway au tournant du si\u00e8cle, Joseph Burr Tiffany, un cousin du vitrailliste Louis Comfort Tiffany, dont le p\u00e8re a fond\u00e9 la compagnie de bijoux.<br><br>Tant de g\u00e9n\u00e9rations, tant de liens familiaux. Et il y en a d\u2019autres encore. M. Youse, responsable de la restauration des pianos en tant que directeur des services techniques et des projets sp\u00e9ciaux de Steinway, est un employ\u00e9 Steinway de quatri\u00e8me g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Son grand-p\u00e8re, aveugle, y \u00e9tait accordeur. Le p\u00e8re de M. Youse l\u2019a conduit au travail une fois qu\u2019il \u00e9tait en \u00e2ge de le faire, et il a \u00e9t\u00e9 embauch\u00e9 dans les ann\u00e9es 1950.<br><br>M. Youse lui-m\u00eame, l\u2019actuel directeur, est arriv\u00e9 en 1973. \u00ab\u2009Mon fils est en haut\u2009\u00bb, dit M. Youse. \u00ab\u2009Il travaille ici depuis 12, 13 ans.\u2009\u00bb<br><br>Ayant pass\u00e9 sa vie autour des touches et des tables d\u2019harmonie, M. Youse est une sorte de d\u00e9tective de piano. Il peut observer un piano et deviner la vie qu\u2019il a v\u00e9cue \u2014 comment il a \u00e9t\u00e9 trait\u00e9, s\u2019il a \u00e9t\u00e9 frapp\u00e9 ou choy\u00e9 et comment il a \u00e9t\u00e9 pris en charge.<br><br>Quelle est son \u00e9valuation du piano de Cole Porter\u2009?<br>Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 entretenu \u00e0 un moment donn\u00e9, mais pas par Steinway. Il y a du feutre vert sous les cordes \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00e9mit\u00e9. \u00ab\u2009Les n\u00f4tres auraient \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9carlates\u2009\u00bb, a dit M. Youse.<br><br>Plus tard, il pr\u00e9cisera aussi que les cl\u00e9s en ivoire n\u2019\u00e9taient pas d\u2019origine.<br><br>Pour l\u2019instant, le piano Cole Porter est silencieux, impraticable. Mais rien qu\u2019en regardant le travail de MM.
